Which Is The Best Shampoo For German Shepherd?

Dogs lose damaged or old hair naturally by shedding. Although, shedding is a natural process for dogs, the frequency and the amount of hair that is shed actually depends on the breed and health of the dog. In my experience, it also depends on the season as well – there are several breeds of dogs that develop thick coats during winters and shed them during summer months.

However, my dog, which is an indoor breed, tends to shed evenly all year. In this article, you’ll get to know about the 5 best shampoo for German shepherd. But first, let’s discuss certain factors that encompass hair loss in dogs.

Reasons For Excessive Hair Loss In Dogs

There are many possible reasons that your dog might be losing hair. It could be allergies, mange, trauma, infections, and hormonal imbalance among various other reasons. Read on to know about some of these reasons:

1) Infection
Your dog might be suffering from an infection if his/her excessive hair loss is taking place. The infection could be folliculitis, cancer, or ringworms. You might start to notice some nodules that can sometimes be present with pus, redness, scaling, hot spots, etc.

2) Mange
Hair loss can occur in patches due to mites. These mites are responsible for causing mange. Your dog might itch all the time due to the skin scaliness caused by mange. In addition to this, if the itching gets severe, it leads to hair loss.

3) Allergies
Your dog might be allergic to specific fleas, chemicals, and foods that are common in products made especially for the skin. These allergies can very well be the reason behind hair loss in your furry friend. In turn, these allergies can cause hot spots, bumps, itching, and redness.

Why Should Use A Dog Shampoo?

There are so many reasons why you should not use a human shampoo on your dog. This is primarily due to the fact that a human shampoo has a PH level that is not optimized for your dog’s coat and skin condition. If you use a human shampoo on your dog, it will cause irritation.

Humans have a pH of 5.5-6.5, which means they have a more acidic skin. This is not the case with dogs as they have a more alkaline skin type i.e. a pH of 7.0-7.5. Using an acidic shampoo on your dog’s skin is sure to cause unnatural effects.

In addition to this, dogs have sensitive skin as opposed to that of humans. They have a total of 3 to 5 layers as compared to humans who have 10 to 15 layers. So, your dog needs protection from chemicals that are harsh on his/her skin.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?

How often should you bathe your dog depends on a lot of things, like his breed, health, coat, activity level, the area of activity, etc. Dogs that spend most of their day outside around things that make them dirty will need a bath more often than those who spend most of their day indoors.

Some people say that if your dog comes in front of you and you come across his/her smell, you need to bathe them. Plus, the best advice on bathing can be given by the vet if your dog is going through a medical treatment.

Which Ingredients To Avoid In A Dog Shampoo?

Unsafe and unnatural ingredients that shouldn’t be there in a dog shampoo. The dog shampoo should not be toxic in any way. Avoid artificial fragrance, artificial colors, formaldehyde preservatives, paraben preservatives, Cocamide-MEA, mineral oil, and Triethanolamine, among various other things in your dog shampoo.

Guide To Bathing Your Dog

Personally, for my two-year-old, Oya, I use a specific list of items for her bath. These include:

1. Best shampoo for a German shepherd

A shampoo is an ingredient that can make your dog love or hate a bathing session. A shampoo of inferior quality causes the skin to dry. Ideally, I go for a mild shampoo that cleanses and removes unwanted odor without removing away the important oils.

Personally, I use Pro Pet Works Natural Oatmeal Dog Shampoo for my dog Oya. The chemicals that are used for manufacturing this product are not at all harmful to your dog. The soap-free shampoo is very gentle; it does not hurt Oya when the shampoo enters her eyes. The oatmeal in this shampoo helps battle Oya’s skin issues like itchiness, irritating skin, or dry skin.

Additionally, since Oya suffers from some allergies, I found this shampoo helpful in calming and treating some of the side effects of such allergies. This shampoo also comes with great conditioners that helped Oya maintain an unmated and silky coat.

2. Conditioner

After shampooing Oya, I use the Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Conditioner. It is also recommended by veterinarians to effectively re-moisturize dry skin, promote healing, and combat skin irritation. I sometimes combine these wonders with vanilla and almond oils and Oya smells as good as she feels and looks.

The thickness of this conditioner might be more than usual But, after using this conditioner, Oya’s hair was tangle-free. Earlier, it was a knotted mess, but the tangles came out smoothly and allowed her hair to dry out naturally. Once it dried out a bit, I could use her brush to detangle her remaining shiny fur coat.

3. Rince Ace 3-way Sprayer

For Oya, I use the Rinse Ace 3-way sprayer. Using this sprayer has made my job of giving Oya a nice and warm bath very easy and quick. There are no permanent hose and messy buckets or cups to fill. There are many spraying features of this sprayer – concentrated (for the paws), gentle (for the face), drenching (for quick rinse) and variable flow from pause to full.

Since Oya is a dog that loves playing in the mud (but then, which dog doesn’t?), this sprayer is great for removing the mud from her paws and underbelly. With so many water pressure options, cleaning a dog never got easier than this.

4. Kong ZoomGroom Brush

The KONG ZoomGroom is the champion of my and Oya’s heart. Primarily, it has three main points:

  • Oya loves the massaging action of the rubber nubs of the brush. I did not have to remind her to stay put while I brushed her because she always felt good.
  • The brush removed most of the detached hair from Oya’s fur coat. It also detangled most of the hair tangles in her fur.
  • While brushing, a lot of static builds up and all other impurities on Oya’s fur come off with the brush.

5. Towel

For Oya, I use the Snuggly Dog Easy Wear Dog Towel. It is like a bathrobe for dogs. This helps Oya (or any other dog, as a matter of fact) in drying and cooling down rapidly. This dog towel absorbs water from Oya’s fur coat and wicks it away for fast drying

The best feature of this coat is that it is convenient enough to be taken anywhere and can be used for a variety of purposes apart from bathing. It could b used in situations like dog shows, dog grooming, water sports, hiking, day-out at the lake, playing in the snow, etc.; the possibilities are endless.

The above products I use personally have made my work easier when it comes to giving Oya her bath. These products are extremely easy to use and don’t harm your pet. For example, the KONG ZoomGroom I use probably gives Oya a very ticklish kind of feeling that she loves; Oya absolutely loves wearing the towel nowadays as well. All of these products are cruelty-free products and are some of the best on the market today.

Tips To Keep In Mind While Choosing A Shampoo For Your Dog

Dogs deserve all the care in the world. Since they can’t talk to us, we have to take extra care of them while feeding or bathing them so they don’t face any sort of discomfort. Here are some of the tips that you should keep in mind when you are in the market for a new shampoo.

1) Dry and sensitive skin
If your canine has dry skin or sensitive skin then you need a moisturizing shampoo that would not only get rid of the dryness but would also help the fur to be silky and smooth.

2) Flea or tick shampoo
If your pet has fleas or ticks then a normal shampoo will not be strong enough to tackle the problem. You need active ingredients in the shampoo that can provide the dog with protection, even if for a short term.

3) White coats
It is a problem that is not acknowledged enough. Owners who have white pets struggle to find a shampoo that helps keep the natural color of the coat without staining or changing it. The special shampoos contain whiteners and brighteners that help the dogs look natural and beautiful.

I have personally used the Pro Pet Works Natural Oatmeal Dog Shampoo on my four-legged best friend and she really seemed to enjoy it. I can vouch for this product and encourage you to purchase this since it is 100% natural and also works as a conditioner. This soap-free shampoo is good for a dog that has a sensitive skin and is prone to allergies more often.
